Alicia*s Art 2018

2 Horse Paintings done by me, Alicia. January 2nd 2018.

I took photographs today of two paintings I made of horses, in oil paint, when I was about 15 or 16, &17 maybe?, years old.

The painting is hanging on the wall, in a gold-tone frame.

There’s my signature, with the year.

Painting of a “Painted” Horse (also called Pinto)

I signed my name and the year on this one too. But it was 1996!
Later in my career, I did not sign my paintings anymore at all; I only signed them in the back. I made a special logo with my name and a snowflake eventually. For my work, my signature needed to be streamlined for the type of art I make, or the drawings not signed. Its part of my aesthetic. This could tell you a lot about my art..

Camera time at Bijouterie Larente. January 10th 2018.

Eddie always liked my natural & ocean objects in my apartment… I wanted him to have this hairclip just to hold & look at! There is also a necklace I bought that Arie made for me… its exquisite & he had just made it “sneaky-style” to match my outfit for today! Then there is the ring… the jeweler at Larente made it custom for me… I had asked him to attach the grey pearl to the ring, for Eddie’s shoe no less!

Thank you for making me this necklace, Arie…
And there’s Eddie’s custom project!

MFA-Italia… explained. January 11th 2018.

In Italy, there is a long-standing tradition in the arts. The city-states hired artists to adorn their churches, their piazzas, & cultivate culture. In Florence, there were artists’ guilds. A “guild” means a group of artists that can make the high-caliber art. To have an “MFA” (Masters in Fine Arts) in Italy, you had to be part of a guild, & have made 20 perfect artworks. A perfect opera. Just like the Cordon Bleu school, it was an impossibly high standard.

I was awarded the gold coin in these photos because of my art & my trips to Italy… which were like a military tour of the state of the arts both times. On the coin there is Michelangelo’s David, and on the other side is the dome of the cathedral. Both of these are considered the best art of Florence. The way the David is depicted on the coin implies that it is less good than the architectural feat of the cathedral’s dome (the Duomo). So here I am, miss Alicia, beating them both. Ruahhhh!

Jade’s name necklace is Also in these photos

New Card: feature. January 21st 2018

Story about this drawing:

The Story of the Special Tree. Why do I call it that? It was because there is an elaborate story behind this drawing-art. When I visited Italy, I drew an old olive tree in my sketchbook. It was in Bolsena, at the top of the hill, where there was a castle. The leaves on the tree were somewhat dangling. To draw the tree as it appears, in pencil, to make a sketch that stands, beautiful, I had to draw the leaves pointing down. It was not to just draw branches with leaves shaped in a shape sticking out of them. There was a path up the hill, and in Bolsena there is a lake. It is a rare thing in Italy, to have a città on the lake.

I drew this at Première Moisson. They make chocolates there; it made me think how Valentine’s Day is coming. I thought my drawing I was about to do could have a Valentine’s theme. So off went my tree… dangling with some hearts (or leaves or fruit). To get the tree to look right, I had to work with colors in a very special way.

Photoset of my workday. January 22nd 2018

I was determined to get a project done today… two projects in fact. I wanted to make a drawing from a tin of tattoo cream I bought from Eric at XS. (A drawing of my own based on the art on the tin.) I also wanted to photograph it because it is so beautiful. So, here are the photos I took that melded the project into one… & they are exquisite.

Intricate earrings. January 26th 2018.

These photographs are of 3 pairs of earrings. Two pairs I bought for my sister. I want to make sure to give her nice things because of her participation in the Canadiens NHL hockey. I have given her a big makeup box (in photos here on as.com), and some earrings, so now a couple more pairs. I thought they look like intricate mandalas, and stars, and her husband is Iranian… so it could be nice for them if they are going out on a night on the town or to a fancy occasion. my pair are the ones that look like medals, & mandalas… & they are exquisite.

New “Cards”. April 17th 2018.

This is a drawing I made on wood, with different pens, of a bird called a Quetzal. It is a tropical species of bird from Central America. The drawing got water-stained, with a circle like a coaster mark. I thought, last night, that it still looks nice, and I added into it with a blue ballpoint pen. This was love stuff for my Doménic, because of the feathers & the colors.

Batik Bone Beads – How Are The Designs Applied?

Batik Bone Beads are predominantly the products of Ghanian and Kenyan tribes-people, however the process itself is said to date back to 4th Century B.C.E Egypt.

Batik Bone Beads History

Originally a means to apply pattern to cloth, the process was adopted within African tribes to apply stunning, contrasting designs to beads and accessories – often symbolic of regal, or higher social status.

The intrinsic colors of these African Beads are brown and white, with a bold design such as the Eye Design Batik Bone Beads, within The Bead Chest “Bone Beads” category.

Traditionally, Batik Bone Beads are made from the bone of agricultural animals such as cow or camel. Some are bleached using a simple dye and heat process, whereas others are allowed to darken with age prior to designs being applied.

Batik Designs

Designs would be carved into the bone using a sharp implement such as a craft knife or stone. Exceptional craftsmen would create the design during the wax-resistance process, painting on swirl or circular motifs with clear beeswax.

Beeswax is vital to the Batik dyeing process, due to it’s resistant properties. When applied hot to bone beads, it would be allowed to dry briefly – sinking into the bone, coating it with a laquer finish that dye could not penetrate.

Batik Dyes

Batik dyes are generally developed using natural resources such as tree bark, sap and plant extract. Darker blue/ black dyes were created using flowers from indigo plants. The Bead Chest’s Peacock Design Batique Bone Beads are a beautiful example of the stunning contrast that could be achieved.

Compared to the Batik cloth-dyeing method, Batik Bone Beads required little in the way of preparation prior to the dyeing process. Occasionally, bone may be boiled to soften it slightly – thought to make it more absorbent for dyeing, and more adhesive to wax.

Bone Bead Qualities

Bone beads also tend to be extremely polished – a process done prior to, and post-dyeing. The length of time a bead would remain dipped into a dye depended upon the effect to be achieved.

Starkly contrasting colors of brown-black and pure white were achieved by leaving the bead to “soak” for longer within the dye. The multi-tonal chestnut brown of our Kenya Bone Beads is achieved by a thinner wax application to the bead, prior to dyeing.

Batik Bone Bead Shapes

Batik Bone Beads come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, however cylindrical and circular beads were popular for tribal jewelry and accessories. At The Bead Chest, we stock an abundant variety of Batik Bone Beads – so why not familiarize yourself with some the most traditional designs including our Zebra and Polkadot Batik Bone Beads.

Learn more about Bone Beads

African bone beads come from Ghana, Africa. The design on the black and white bone beads is created through a dying method known as “batik”, which is a wax relief process. These African beads are strung on raffia and worn as is, but many beaders use these beads as the highlight of their creation.

Natural Bone Beads from Africa

Bone beads have a long history on the African continent. Bone is one of several natural materials that have been available in Africa for millennia including wood, stone, and clay. Bone beads have been made throughout the African continent including East, West, and even South Africa. Historically, bone beads may be made from any number of bone sources including ivory from different kinds of animal tusks or antlers. Other natural materials similar to bone used to make beads include horn, ostrich eggshells, marine and freshwater seashells such as clams, and also coral. Bone is unique among bead making materials due to both its strength and because it can be carved by hand and polished into many different shapes and sizes. Bone is also relatively lighter than similar size beads made from glass or metal.

One of the best-known varieties of bone beads is the Mudcloth Bone Batik from East Africa. Kenya in particular is a major producer of Batik Bone Beads. These beads are usually made from Cow or Water Buffalo bone that is first bleached and then patterned. Patterning is achieved by a special method where wax is used to apply a dye based on any one of a number of traditional geometric patterns. These designs may include stripes, dots, swirls, and other decorative motifs. Because each bead is individually patterned, this gives each piece a unique flair. The variety of different Bone Batik design styles makes these beads a versatile addition to any bead or jewelry designer’s bead chest and adds a great natural touch to any project.

Another type of bone bead that is made in Africa is the Snake Vertebrae bead. Believe or not, these beads are actually made from real snakes! Such vertebrae may be the inspiration for other Snake beads that have been made with glass that capture the same characteristic interlocking shape of real vertebrae. Such beads can be a lot of fun to work with. Likewise, fish vertebrae that tend to be more cylindrical and have also been used to make African Beads. Fish Vertebrae beads are amazingly light to wear and can be integrated into many artistic beaded pieces.

Write-up
About WALT DISNEY’s Business Card

I planned the card to have very colourful elements, but in a very special “happy & girly” rainbow palette. In the 90’s, I was very attached to characters like Ariel, Jasmine, Mulan, Simba, Belle… and the older ladies; Aurora, Snow White & Cinderella. The whole card is girly! Next time don’t have a woman design it! (That’s a joke.) The Disney Princess, and her Prince Charmings, and her cavalier attitude, are well-loved by all. My rainbow has some pastel pink and neon yellow…

I have Disney’s original art that came before or during the movies; I have 3 artworks that I own. Disney was drafting pretty ladies! The princess fairy tales appeal to all; they are safe viewing for children; happy and “nice” for them, and their parents, and all fans. As a grown woman, I think about toys and activities to make happy children! Bratty kids that are smarter than their parents, & telling them whats what! One of my favourite tricks… in cahoots.

Hello Kitty makes an appearance, so does Queen Mab, castle-wood, the end of the fairytale – whats the engagement ring going to be like?- and the tagline “Princesses Ink”, in old calligraphy style script.
