Fall Equinox 2019
Friday, September 20th, 2019
1:00am
The September Equinox in 2019, & the beginning of Autumn, will be at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, September 23rd. (Eastern Time)
(Montreal is in the same time-zone as New York City.)
There are two solstices, and two equinoxes, in every calendar year, that mark the change of the seasons. That is our solar calendar!
In December, when it changes to winter, the winter solstice has the shortest day of the year in store for us… the day with the least amount of daylight hours!
The lunar calendar has 13 lunar cycles of 28-days per year; the length of the year being similar as a solar year, but longer. Moon phases vary! The dates vary as well, when trying to time-base them on our solar calendar. The Natives of Canada used the lunar year!!! 28 days times the lunar cycle, waxing and waning, and the magnetism of the ocean tides from the moon, perpetually beating the sand, and 28 days is the natural cycle of women!
The solar calendar is what we use in western society, and dates back from the year zero~ in Rome! It was officially calculated based on the sun, the Earth’s movements, and the seasonal cycles and changes!
Its not that complicated; we live it, naturally! Even a human resting heartbeat is 60 beats per minute.
We’re not perfectly exact…. every solar year (every calendar year) we are off from a perfect calculation by about a few minutes!!
Goodnight, & welcome into Autumn…

This is a religious altarpiece from about the mid-1300’s in medieval Italy. It is painted in tempera, and painted with gold, and built with wood.
It depicts a story from the Bible. This story, in this particular mise-en-scène, was repeated in the history of painting, by different artists, and it’s called an Annunciation. A religious painting called an “Annunciation”. What the artists paint was the moment when Archangel Gabriel arrived suddenly, and told The Virgin Mary that she was expecting. She was to be a mother… a baby was on the way! Archangel Gabriel told her that the baby was the son of God, and was to be a great leader and teacher.
(more coming tomorrow)
Saturday, 2:45pm
The metallic tones, the opalescence, and even the greenish tone of the figures’ skin looks this way because the paint was tempera; egg-based paint with pigment. Remember, the painting was made 700 years ago; there were no tubes of oil paint, and definitely not a camera or a TV! What makes this altarpiece very beautiful is that there is a bright all-over effect, that looks bright yellow, from using a lot of gold; in the picture, in the background, and on the intricate wood framing. The framing on this painting does not only display the painting in a rectangle; it creates an architectural space. It’s a gold-painted wood construction with depth. It put the scene in a chapel, or maybe a church, or maybe a holy space, in the shelter of God.
There are four “people” (figures) in this panting. Gabriel, with his angel wings, is alighting to give his message to Mary, who is cringing away (to the right). They are the two figures in the center. On the outside, there are two saints, on either side. There are also four small portraits in the circle “medallions” above the four figures.
Angel Gabriel has alighted; his message is important; “Are you listening?” He is imposing on Mary, in a room that is in her home; so she is shying away. She is fickle, like the sun, but the saint behind her, a woman, holding her long cross, is showing that she has a right to hold a spiritual shield up to protect herself, and her innate reaction is acceptable. The woman Saint’s head is turned away, mimicking Mary’s motion.
Archangel Gabriel alighting has an important mission; to give Mary his message, welcome or not! By his wings, and the floating part of his dress behind him, you see he has arrived suddenly- and he must deliver his message! The Saint figure behind him, a man, a helper, holds a feather, like from Gabriel’s wings, pointed in, towards himself. He also holds a herald; a flag. The man solidly stands his ground. Gabriel is an angel on a heralding mission! He must stand his ground!
The two Saints are standing on pedestals. It is like they are statues. Their presence is symbolic only. The halos show wisdom and reverence to tradition, and steadfastness, strength and time.
Gabriel holds a plant frond; he also wears it in a wreath on his head. It is Spring; and he is trying to be gentle… Saviour Christ was born on Christmas Day, December 25th, (some say he marked the beginning of winter and was born on December 21st). It is the beginning of Spring! Count 9 months back and it is the beginning of Spring. This annunciation is taking place at the beginning of Spring.
Mary has a vase of flowers in her home; they are prickly, and are shaped like flutes. She has trumpets in her home. She must bear her situation.
If you look at what the 4 figures are doing in the medallions, you can see they are making a caucus, with many opinions on the situation, but it is like guidance. There are many facets. They are four characters from the Bible.
This Annunciation is noteworthy because of a special nuance that it has; the words Archangel Gabriel is speaking are written on the painting, meandering out of his mouth, towards The Virgin Mary. This element is different than other contemporary paintings. (Different than other paintings done in the same time, the medieval times.)

The word altarpiece describes a work of art that sits on the balducci (table) in the altar area of a church. The priest stands in this area when delivering his sermon; when speaking a mass. In the past eras of our history, like the time of this painting, an altarpiece may have been the fanciest and even only artwork in a village. Larger towns did exist, with more people, and large churches, and more art. A local family that had means might have been the ones that commission the artwork; they pay the artist. The work then goes in a church or chapel of a church. Family tales that parallel saint stories could be asked to be in the picture, or, more local, like culture of that village, rather than family specific.
I think there might be signs in this annunciation altarpiece that maybe we can’t see as well, because we are out of context. I think maybe the local prayers were about naval travel in the spring! Safe trips, safe set-outs… safe returns, prayers, well-wishes for families of merchants and sailors. Even nuances in the painting that are like map details of the waterway they used!
Don’t forget… this would make perfect sense to the local church-goers (art viewers) at the time!!!

This is a drawing I made last night. Its a maquette (that means a mock-up) for making a large landscape painting on a stretcher.
I gave one of my artist friends homework… to paint like Turner! But also his own, and maybe some me, or Canada’s Harris. Since his brother paints too, he wants to work with the project too. And their father said they better do as they are told!!! They better take it seriously,,,, but they are adults, lol. They are going to work at it first for a week in watercolor. And learn watercolor in the process! They are very experienced artists, so…

You want to know something that I really like? Christmas! Snow and lights, at night, in my life-long neighborhoods… (preferably not too much ice or huge snowstorms!) ..having a tree in the house, gifts under it, gifts to wrap, …time to make my special shortbread cookies… family, planning, excitement… relishing all of December, (and even November) as the special Christmas~time part of the year… I love shopping (& making) for my loved ones, (I’m the best gift-giver) and I love (or try not to be sad) that I dream of my man coming for Christmas Eve; for Christmas…. Romantic wishes!
I love the Christmas music on the radio! …that it goes to classics… or beautiful orchestral music!

What I refer to as “blackwork” (in tattooing) are my drawings, in black only, of designs, with representation, and ornate script lines, and shapes. You can cover a larger area of your body… with less pain! Since the tattoo isn’t being completely filled in, with the needle, on the “skin canvas” area. It can look very beautiful, could also be referred to as tribal, or a sleeve, or a wrap-around….

Bélier & Aries
Mister Béelier is very charming, good-looking, gallant, and very devoted! The Aries lady will think she has met the most wonderful man, and think of it as a marriage – that she wants – in an instant! Miss Aries will enchant Bélier, who hangs on to the every word of his enchantress! There’s nothing that Aries does that isn’t fascinating to Bélier. Aries will think she is very lucky to have the attention of Bélier; his fascination with her; his devotion. Bélier would never stray, ever. Once he has met Aries, he knows what love is, and is ready for his forever. Aries better remember; his devotion means that he is very very protective, will ward off any stray Toms, and wants to assure that she is always happy, glowing, and making. The Bélier man loves all the pastime of Aries; cooking, writing, making the home, making art… His devotion is so strong, Aries better be ready… to understand Bélier’s love, and that Bélier won’t let her out of his sight for life. How could she refuse him, anyways? Aries wants that big heart of his beating by her side forever.

**Inspiration
When I decided to write about ecosystems; and spiders; a time ago, (a few tabs ago), I had the inspiration to start about it, from then (and now)., from,,, the spiders themselves.
I think that they are adapted to Canada, the occasional ones (or more) that decided to move here; they are not dying, and they are not impeding on any of our ecosystems; like an invader species; that could cause an imbalance.
When I had a lot of ripe bananas at home, or, when I use a lot of floral or fruity perfumes & beauty products, they decide that they are on their protecting mission. I see them come out of the “woodwork” in the house, and I can observe that they are even protective of me!!! Those little guys (or little ladies). White widow spiders with personality! Sweet & cute! Can you believe it? So I write…

Pazzi Chapel
Pazzi Chapel is a structure integrated with Santa Croce in Florence, Italy. I visited there many years ago. I was very impressed. I took beautiful photographs. There is a portico, a garden, a cloister, a dome, columns, decoration and art.
When I returned home to Montreal, I made a painting of Pazzi Chapel, from an odd angle. I used one of my photographs to make the painting. My painting is in acrylic, and it is 36 by 24 inches, on a stretched canvas. I had a series planned; of four structural paintings from my Italy trip; but painting the chapel was very difficult, and I was in school, so I had to abandon the project due to lack of time.
Herein I show photographs of the building, my painting of it, and another painting. I bought the other painting. I found it for sale at an eclectic store, and it wasn’t expensive. I thought it was beautiful, and looked like Matisse, whose work I’m familiar with. Later I realized it was a Matisse! It was shrink-wrapped at the store and for sale as if it was a poster.
Looking at the stripes on the porcelain in Matisse’s painting, I would say this was his first painting in this style, that it was very successful experiment, that it broke new ground… and that it’s also a painting of Pazzi Chapel, but from memory! An artist was born!!!
My painting of the place focuses on a column, the decorations, and the inside of the dome. There were so many colors! Purples, light yellow, rosso… Colors and patterns and embellished classical architectural shapes. And shadows; depth; perspective.
Matisse took the same subject matter with him! He made a painting that has a table and a pot of flowers, maybe the wallpaper in the room. If you look carefully you realize its elements from a visit to Florence. Click thru the photographs and compare! His masterworks, in his original style, followed.
Henri Matisse is famous for painting interiors, in a rough but very interesting way, using fauve colors, space, and decorative patterns. His work was from about the same time as the Impressionists, as modern art developed in France.

Made as they are
I classify this set of crystal hearts as a mix of Jasper, Moss Agate, & Rhyolite (orbicular Jasper)
Origin: China
Ocean Jasper is a rare mineral, from only one mine near Marovato, Madagascar. Is called Ocean Jasper because the deposits are part of the coastline, and can only be reached by boat, and removed only during low tide. This stone is immediately recognizable by its concentric rings of color, earning at the name “Orbicular Ocean Jasper.”

Nikki Carello as a flower
(its not finished yet~)
“At night, I was dreaming of the type of flower I was going to draw… I saw the design in my head, and saw flower vines that used to grow at my grandmother’s ranch; purple ones. Then I said aloud that I lost it; it was like I lost the design all of a sudden.
It was a psychic dream; the next day I found something… an artwork, with flowers, and flumes even, that I then identified as art by my ancestor, Raphael, a.k.a. Velasquez, aka Jacques Cartier (aka Steve H**ding)
The flowers were like my dream!
Yesterday, I went out drawing, and I managed to remember all my ideas, despite myself. ~When I looked at my first flower and realized I had done it exactly like all the things I had envisioned ~and it was done exquisitely beautifully”

His colors and markings are exotic; as is his eye
