Songbird Mandala (Tantric Twin Jewel), (BRANDON), markers on paper, 8.5 x 11 inches, 2013
I started by wanting to draw the tantric twin crystal I gave him. I gave it to him because its like the yellow jewel drawing I had sent him, and because he’s like my creative artist tantric twin, and a soulmate. This I just know from his music, and from his special concert he gave me, and the years of following each other. We had a night of surprise jamming together, and I started sending him all kinds of special things by text. I sang my best possible, he looked so moved and shocked, we had a special jam interaction by internet, and we were dancing and it was passionate. He was the one dancing lol. He shakes and dances when he’s happy to hear my voice. The interactions were so special, and sensual, and moving, and he is so beautiful when he shares his spirit with his voice. After I drew the crystal, I knew I wanted to draw a bird, because I called him songbird as his special name. I drew a Canadian marsh bird that we had seen on our West Island park visits. Its a red-winged blackbird. He had visited us like an animal totem. I decided the crystal should be in his wing, and would be part of his red and yellow stripe. I called him my songbird right away, its his magic talent, he expresses his essence, its a talent that I don’t have. I told him I’m gifted in the visual arts, and could never do the things he does with music. The bird had to be sitting on something, so I decided he needed to be on my heart, because he’s always hanging out near there, singing songs about my loves, in my life, and his music touches me. The bird had a cute face with his little beak, but then I decided the beak needed to be open and singing. But I messed up the drawing, fixing the beak. But then we realized its a double-beaked bird, like Brandon with his double voice, when he was someone else. I drew the water, the spot where we sat by the river, with the lush grass, and the river is his certain shade of green (seafoam). I drew the starry night, because its like lyrics in the song ‘wish you were here’. I know I’ll be wishing for him, looking at his drawing that’ll be in our room. The rest of us, whoevers here hanging out, will be enjoying it and feeling bliss looking at it, and Brandon and me will have a special relationship forever from afar. I wanted to put this big swirling line of colors in the sky; it turned out looking like my cats tail, with the crescent moon within it. We wondered if I was the cat that had the bird, or maybe Fils just got him, cause he showed him love and nuzzling and he was already in songs. Fils actually is featured in a few of his songs. The bird has rays coming out of him, they echo his blocks of color on his wings, and could be like his wings open. Brandon’s Mandala is different, it became an animal totem mandala. Its fitting because he had read my native books and made beautiful native music.
